DAT Test Day Checklist: What to Bring and What to Expect
A complete DAT test day checklist covering ID, snacks, what to expect at Prometric, energy management, and what happens after the exam.

DAT Test Day Checklist: What to Bring and What to Expect
Test day is the performance of your preparation, not the preparation itself. The last 24 hours before the exam can swing your score by 10 to 20 points. We see this every cycle: a forgotten ID, a blood sugar crash, or a freezing testing room can undo months of review. This checklist is what we used ourselves to walk into Prometric calm, prepared, and ready to convert practice into a real score.
Bring two IDs, a light snack, water, and layers. Arrive early, use the optional tutorial, and manage your energy through the scheduled break. Trust your practice and avoid last-minute cramming. The best preparation is the kind that makes test day feel routine, not dramatic.
What to Bring to the DAT
Bring two forms of identification. Your primary ID must be government-issued and show your full name exactly as it appears on your ADA registration, plus a current photo and signature. A passport or driver license is the safest choice. Bring a secondary ID, such as a student ID or credit card, as backup.
Bring a light snack and water. A protein bar or a small handful of nuts paired with a complex carb will keep blood sugar stable without the crash. Avoid heavy, sugary foods.
Bring layers. Testing centers are often cold, and shivering through the PAT is not a strategy.
If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them. The exam is long, and clear vision matters for every section.
You do not need pens, pencils, paper, or a calculator. The center provides scratch paper and a basic calculator for Quantitative Reasoning only.
What Not to Bring
Leave your phone, smartwatch, fitness tracker, and any other electronic device in your car or at home. Personal items are not allowed in the testing room. You will get a locker, but the less you bring, the less you have to worry about.
Do not bring study notes, books, or flashcards. The hour before the exam is for calming your nerves, not cramming. Cramming raises anxiety and rarely produces new understanding.
Arrival and Check-In
Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Give yourself time for parking, finding the building, and check-in. Rushing through the door at the last minute is the fastest way to start the exam stressed.
At check-in, you will show ID, sign a digital signature, have your photo taken, and provide a palm-vein scan or fingerprint. You will store your belongings in a locker and receive a key. Then you will be escorted to your station. The whole process usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.
The Optional Tutorial and Breaks
Use the optional tutorial. It is not wasted time. It lets you get comfortable with the mouse, screen layout, and navigation. Even if you have practiced at home, the Prometric interface can look slightly different.
The DAT includes a scheduled break. Use it to eat your snack, use the restroom, and stretch. Do not review notes. Your brain needs the reset. Return to your seat with enough time to settle in before the next section begins.
During the Exam: What to Expect
The exam is delivered in four scored sections: Survey of Natural Sciences, Perceptual Ability Test, Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning. You will see one section at a time. Once a section ends, you cannot return to it.
For the PAT, use the scratch paper the center provides. Practice with limited scratch space during your prep so the real layout feels normal.
For Reading Comprehension, you can scroll through the passage as you answer. Do not try to memorize every detail. Focus on structure and keywords.
If you need an unscheduled break, raise your hand. The proctor will escort you out, but the timer does not stop. Use this only if necessary.
Mindset and Energy Management
Eat a balanced breakfast before you leave. Avoid excessive caffeine if it makes you jittery.
Get a full night of sleep for two nights before the exam, not just the night before. A tired brain loses focus faster than an unprepared one.
During the exam, breathe. If panic rises, take five seconds to reset. Close your eyes, exhale, and remind yourself that you have practiced this. One difficult question does not define your score.
After the Exam: Scores and Next Steps
Official DAT scores are sent to the schools you selected during registration. You will not receive a printed unofficial score at the testing center, so expect to wait for your official report.
The ADA reports all scored attempts to dental schools, so retake planning matters. You must wait at least 60 days between attempts, and you can take the DAT up to four times in any 12-month period.
How to Prepare for Test Day Without the Panic
The confidence that carries you through test day comes from realistic repetition. Full-length practice tests should simulate the exact timing, breaks, and fatigue of the real exam. PAT generators that create unique questions every time covering all six subtypes, with 3D models and video explanations, let you enter the testing center having already practiced every spatial challenge. When you prepare with the right tools, test day becomes a routine performance instead of a mystery.
Look for a platform that covers every section in one place, with enough questions to build stamina and enough tests to train endurance. If you want all of that integrated, Crack the DAT is built for it.
A great test day starts long before you walk into the center. Know what to bring, arrive early, trust your practice, and manage your energy. The DAT is long, but with the right checklist and the right prep, you can stay calm and perform at your best.
